What is Phobia?

A phobia is an irrational fear of or an extreme fear of something. The keyword is ‘fear’. This is an abnormal fear resulting from exposure to an object or an activity. It can also be an intense dislike of something.

What his teacher does not know is that John suffers from Mastigophobia – described as a fear of punishment, or fear of being beaten or whipped.

So, John is whipped. As a result of the phobia, the whipping triggers a panic attack in John. The attack sends his body into a fight-or-flight response. This is an extreme overdrive response of the nervous system. His heart beating goes too fast to handle its exertion. The end result is a cardiac arrest. How to distinguish phobia from other anxiety forms

The most important signature of phobia is its natural reoccurrence on a particular situation or object.

The following physiological symptoms may also accompany a phobic incident:

Diarrhoea, faintness, stomach disorders, rapid pounding heartbeat, flushing of the face, frequent urination, tremulousness, perspiration, choking feelings, etc.
