Kisii University Workers Stage Demos, Threaten to Boycott Work

Kisii University workers, on Wednesday, engaged the police in running battles after they staged demonstrations within the university premises.

The angry university staff used the protest to complain on the delayed salaries.

“We are demonstrating because we have not been paid. We work too long without pay”, said one of the demonstratin workers.

University administration ran out of means to contain the workers who were threatening to boycott.

They opted to indulge the efforts of the anti-rioting police from the Kisii Central Police station.

The police responded swiftly, and managed to contain the protests.

Fearing that the workers’ protests could negatively impact on the upcoming graduation ceremony, the administration decided to hand the workers half salaries.

The administration is citing Covid-19 pandemic as the cause of their financial crisis.

Most small businesses in the locality are struggling to survive as a result of delayed payments from their clients who work in the university.
