NTSA Announces Comprehensive Safety Inspections for School Vehicles
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has scheduled a nationwide compliance operation targeting school buses and vans. This initiative is set to begin next week, coinciding with the return of students for the new term on April 27.
Under the ‘Operation Watoto Wafike Salama’ program, the authority aims to enhance the safety of learners during their commutes. The NTSA noted that mechanical deficiencies and inadequate vehicle maintenance remain primary factors in road traffic incidents involving students.
Inspection Standards and Mechanical Requirements
The inspections will focus on several critical safety components. Technical teams will assess braking systems, tire condition, and lighting functionality, as well as the overall structural integrity of the vehicles. Additionally, officials will verify the presence of functional speed limiters and safety belts for all passengers.

Operational Restrictions and Driver Requirements
The NTSA reminded school transport operators of the mandatory travel window, which restricts school vehicles to the hours between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. This policy is designed to reduce risks associated with limited visibility and driver exhaustion. The authority emphasized that operating outside these hours increases the likelihood of accidents.
Beyond vehicle inspections, enforcement officers will check driver documentation and qualifications. Random sobriety tests will be administered to ensure that drivers are in a suitable condition to operate student transport.
