KUCCPS Suspends Teachers Training College Intake for 2025 KCSE Graduates

KUCCPS Halts TTC Intake for 2025 KCSE Cohort

The government, through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), has temporarily suspended the admission of 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) graduates into Teachers Training Colleges (TTCs).

For the primary teacher education intake scheduled for September 2026, admissions will be strictly limited to existing teachers seeking to upgrade their qualifications from a P1 Certificate to a Diploma. As a result, recent high school graduates will not be eligible to enroll in primary education courses during this specific admission cycle.

Rationale Behind the Policy Shift

The Ministry of Education has implemented this directive to address an existing oversupply in the teaching sector. Data indicates a substantial number of trained teachers are currently awaiting official deployment. Admitting new students into these primary teaching programs would further compound the existing surplus. Estimates suggest that this suspension could remain in place for up to three years. This timeframe is intended to allow the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) an opportunity to employ the current backlog of qualified professionals.

Alternative Educational Avenues

Secondary school graduates who initially planned to enter TTCs are advised to pursue alternative higher education pathways. The government is strongly encouraging these candidates to enroll in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

TVET centers provide a wide range of practical and professional courses designed to suit various academic backgrounds and career objectives. For more details regarding alternative career paths and educational opportunities, individuals can visit teacher.co.ke.

Official Statement from KUCCPS

The policy update was officially communicated by Dr. Agnes Wahome, the Chief Executive Officer of KUCCPS. She made the announcement during a virtual KUCCPS briefing on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

In addition to addressing the TTC intake, Dr. Wahome utilized the session to share broader updates concerning ongoing student placement processes and to clarify other related placement matters.
