Ksh 1.9b To Be Spent On Desks As Schools Brace For Resumption

Cabinet Secretary of Education Prof. George Mahoha said the government will spend Kshs 1.9 Billion for the new desks that will conform with the Covid-19 protocols set forth by the Ministry of Health.

Prof. Magoha was inspecting and assessing the preparedness of learning institutions in the coastal region ahead of the resumption of all learning activities in January 2021.

The ministry informed that these desks will be locally assembled by artisans in the counties and are supposed to be ready ahead of the reopening of schools.

Magoha also said the designs of the new desks have taken into consideration the safety measures of learners as Kenyans in the new normal era.

Education Officials to Meet and Actualize the sitting arrangements in schools

The Cabinet secretary revealed that education stakeholders will have a meeting this coming Friday to deliberate further on new modalities for reopening the learning institutions. This is where they will actualize the change of sitting arrangements in schools.

This shortly follows after the Education CS said that schools would remain closed until the country’s coronavirus curve flattened as per the World Health Organization’s standard.

In addition, Magoha argued that it would be unrealistic to play poker with the lives of Kenyan students.

Only 2 TVET Institutions Met Conditions for Gradual Reopening

The education Cabinet Secretary regrettably noted at the same time, that only two TVET institutions countrywide had met the laid down protocols for gradual reopening.

As said by the CS, some institutions do not have enough thermo-guns while others have not put in place measures that will encourage social distance among students.

The CS reiterated that consultations among key stakeholders, including parents and teachers’ unions, are all in agreement that schools can only re-open once the COVID-19 curve is flattened.

The CS criticized those pushing for re-opening of schools, saying they did not know the magnitude of what they were actually risking.
